Wallace Fountain (B&W)

antimuseum.com-denfert-5403
The archetypal Paris fountain is a gift from Richard Wallace, an English gentleman and benefactor of the besieged Paris and Parisians in 1870, the illegitimate son of Richard Seymour-Conway and a man with a complex biography. The fountains were designed by Lebourg. The rationale behind the fountains is to be found in the fact that many aqueducts had been destroyed during the siege of Paris and those fountains were meant to bring drinking water to the City. There are four caryatids, but on this picture, only 3 are visible.
