They are mainly of Chinese and Japanese origin.<\/p>\n<p>Most of us know these species as clematis in English, while some know it as traveller\u2019s joy, a name the British invented for their sole use, C. vitalba, by the herbalist John Gerard; virgin\u2019s bower for C. terniflora, C. virginiana, and C. viticella; old man\u2019s beard, one applies to several species with prominent seedheads; leather flower for those with fleshy petals; or vase vine for the North American Clematis viorna.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s a poem about the Clematis by <a href=\"https:\/\/allpoetry.com\/The-Clematis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alexander Bathgate<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"title vcard item otitle_8531099\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Clematis<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"poem_body\">\n<div class=\"orig_8531099\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Fair crown of stars of purest ray,<br \/>\nHung aloft on Mapau tree,<br \/>\nWhat floral beauties ye display,<br \/>\nStars of snowy purity;<br \/>\nAround the dark-leaved mapau\u2019s head<br \/>\nUnsullied garlands ye have spread.
