Bagatelle is a chateau well hidden in the Bois de\u00a0Boulogne where you can find flowers<\/a> and especially roses, gardens and the Sphinx of Bagatelle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"The sphinx of bagatelle is a novel<\/a> by Romanian Princess Marthe Bibesco (aka Martha Bibescu<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The book is a bit hard to find, though. Etonians might get it from the school\u2019s library<\/a>. It can also be bought from AbeBooks<\/a>. The original French version doesn\u2019t seem to have survived the test of time.<\/p>\n

“In 1775, the Count of Artois, Louis\u00a0XVI\u2019s brother, acquired a small castle built around 1720 in the Bois de\u00a0Boulogne, which had been a well-known place of libertinism, hence the name \u201cBagatelle*.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The count made a bet with Marie-Antoinette that he would have the castle rebuilt in two months.<\/p>\n

The work began on 21 September 1777 and was completed in time for the inauguration on November\u00a026.<\/p>\n

Sphinxes are ubiquitous<\/h3>\n

Sphinxes are ubiquitous in Bagatelle. They are a symbol of the \u201creturn from Egypt\u201d as it\u2019s called, following the French campaign in Egypt and Syria<\/a>\u00a0which ended up in the Abukir\u00a01799 debacle (from Napoleon\u2019s point of view).<\/p>\n

For a reminder of the number of deaths and casualties check here<\/a>. Difficult to tell precisely how many died there on the French side, but it seems that it was a good many.<\/p>\n

There are other animals there such as these beautiful felines on the newly renovated doors of the main building.<\/p>\n

The rest of the chateau is in pretty poor state, though.<\/p>\n

In French, the word \u201cbagatelle\u201d originates from the Low Latin \u201cbagattire\u201d meaning \u201ctrifles\u201d, or from the Italian \u201cbagatella\u201d: \u201cjuggler trick\u201d. Bagatelles are objects or opinions of little value (mere trifles<\/a>). In the singular, bagatelle can have the same meaning, but can also refer to the sexual act.<\/p>\n
