The neighborhood truly blossomed in the 1920s when intellectuals and artists began to congregate there, forming a cultural hotbed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The History of the Montparnasse Neighborhood<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There appeared to be a great sense of \u201cspirit\u201d in Montparnasse around this time. Artists like Picasso and Hemingway frequented the establishments, one of which <a href=\"https:\/\/omeka.wlu.edu\/wluparis\/items\/show\/8#:~:text=It%20became%20a%20center%20for,drawings%20on%20napkins%20as%20exchange.\">allowed artists to provide drawings in exchange for hospitality<\/a>. But why? A quick walk around the neighborhood reveals an expanse of artistic expression. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondationcartier.com\/en\/collection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foundation Cartier<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> holds frequent contemporary art exhibits featuring the works of young artists from around the world. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/parisjetaime.com\/transport\/rue-de-la-gaite-p2028\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rue de la Ga\u00eet\u00e9 district<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alone holds six different theaters, each of which has a significant cultural importance to the city. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatreinparis.com\/theatre\/theatre-de-la-gaite-montparnasse\">Th\u00e9\u00e2tre de la Ga\u00eet\u00e9-Montparnasse<\/a>, originally a caf\u00e9-concert venue in the 1870s, now exhibits local comedians and musicians.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sortiraparis.com\/en\/what-to-visit-in-paris\/history-heritage\/articles\/171720-a-little-tour-of-the-montparnasse-cemetery\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montparnasse cemetery holds the graves of many great France-based artists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Man Ray, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Camille Saint-Sa\u00ebns, and Eug\u00e8ne Carri\u00e8re, to name a few. With historical significance everywhere you look, the district feels optimized for creative expression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Circuiting the perimeter of the cemetery, you can find multiple contemporary art galleries showcasing local creations. The original lion was built in 1880 as a symbol of French resistance during the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.herodote.net\/18_fevrier_1871-evenement-18710218.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1870 siege of Belfort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in which the French garrison rebuffed advancing Prussian forces for 103 days until the Armistice of Versailles was signed. The lion serves not only as a reminder of the troop\u2019s heroics, but also of the country\u2019s autonomy. That same sense of autonomy is what defines Montparnasse\u2019s history as a district &#8211; starving artists forging their paths through life. Man Ray and Hemingway may be gone, but their spirits live on in the unapologetic expressionism of Paris\u2019s 14th arrondissement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I keep hearing that Montparnasse is no longer what it used to be, that the old spirit is no longer there, that the Montparnos, these bohemian artists aren&#8217;t around anymore.
