Created at the end of the Ancien Régime, it preserves within its high walls the bourgeois memory of the city, with epitaphs of legal scholars, solicitors, cavalry officers and physicians. One of six dormant cemeteries in Caen, it accepted its last burial in 1994. A bucolic and romantic spot, it offers complete escape from urban noise, shaded by trees well over a century old.

Notable figures buried here include Émile Alliot-Préjardin (1831–1914), founder of the newspaper Le Bonhomme normand; Exupère Caillemer (1837–1913), jurist and dean of the Lyon law faculty; and Jean-Baptiste Harou-Romain (1760–1822), first departmental architect of Calvados, who designed the Préfecture and the former Palais de Justice. The cemetery also holds the tomb of François-Guillaume-Stanislas Trébutien (1800–1870), translator, orientalist, and publisher, close friend of the writer Barbey d’Aurevilly.
