I love them so much that I decided to make them the subject of this week&#8217;s post. Lately I&#8217;ve been photographing trees left, right and centre. And strangely enough, not always in colour. Generally speaking, it&#8217;s not really my favourite tree \u2014 with the exception of the magnificent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moroccan-market.com\/content\/14-some-caracteristics-and-properties-of-wood-of-thuja\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moroccan thujas<\/a>, which this one did rather bring to mind.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Photographing trees in black and white?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trees are a vivid, luscious green, and the Ari\u00e8ge is no exception. On my first visit, I could have sworn I&#8217;d been transported to Ireland \u2014 the grass was that luxuriantly green. Yet when I came to work on my new book <em>Regards sur le Couserans<\/em>, I opted decisively for black and white. Working in black and white turned out to be a genuine revelation. Indeed, many of the shots were taken directly in that mode, for which I have had a particular fondness for a long time.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s not entirely new to me, mind you \u2014 I&#8217;ve been shooting in black and white all my life. There was a time when, if you wanted to enlarge your own prints, you simply had no choice in the matter, unless you happened to be very well off, which I certainly wasn&#8217;t. The quality of the lenses of that era was, how shall I put it \u2014 mediocre at best. You had to have serious money in your coffers then to afford decent equipment and derive worthwhile results, which really wasn&#8217;t my situation. These days, for film, I&#8217;ve moved on to the Canon EF I inherited from my father, which I&#8217;ve put back into service. A report to follow soon. Digital makes that conversion possible, but more importantly it also allows black-and-white shooting directly through the viewfinder on mirrorless cameras, or via the control screen on older DSLRs <a href=\"https:\/\/antimuseum.com\/materiel-photographique\/\">like my D850<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the image above, it&#8217;s plain to see that colour \u2014 even though the process has come a long way since the 1970s and 80s \u2014 adds absolutely nothing. Quite the contrary, in fact. Black and white is unrivalled when it comes to bringing out stone, cloud, shadow and contrast. And it neatly sidesteps those blank white or flat blue skies that have precious little to offer. You could also strip out all the colour while keeping a single selective hue (green being the most interesting here). That&#8217;s something I&#8217;ll come back to in another post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unter den Linden<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One weekend, a few years ago \u2014 as we do most years \u2014 we went to visit what is known as the &#8220;Bishops&#8217; Palace&#8221; at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ariegepyrenees.com\/en\/cultural-heritage\/palace-of-the-bishops-of-saint-lizier\/\">Saint-Lizier<\/a>. Turning round, I caught sight of this magnificent centuries-old lime tree. It&#8217;s impossible to convey any sense of its scale without a human figure in the frame for reference. The lady standing beneath it gives a sense of scale.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Saint-Lizier to Sucy-en-Brie<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ever since that revelation about trees in black and white, I&#8217;ve been out photographing all manner of specimens in that mode \u2014 and what&#8217;s more, in square format, which I find particularly satisfying aesthetically. I discovered this with the <a href=\"https:\/\/antimuseum.com\/en\/photography-gear\/\" type=\"page\" id=\"6444\">new Z9 I took on last year<\/a> (already 6,000 shutter actuations in such a short time \u2014 a sure sign of how much pleasure I take in shooting with it). If black and white lends itself to a degree of afterthought in photography (in native RAW mode, which always retains the colour information), square format is final. There&#8217;s no going back. It&#8217;s a commitment on the photographer&#8217;s part, not unlike what happens with film.
