It was talc in our bit of the Ariège – but similar scenes. Thanks for the memories.
Then I know where you were staying. It must have been in Luzenac, which was famous for its talc mines indeed. Not sure about the pollution though. All this mining activity must have been terribly bad for the environment. Up there in Bentaillou 6,000 ft above sea level one can still find remnants of the mine and it’s all been left behind in 1984 I think. They closed the mine, packed and left. What have we done to this planet?! I’ll post more pics about the mine. The view is absolutely stunning.
