The Sky: Sunrise, Sunset, Repeat

The Beauty in the Sky

Every day starts the same, with a sunrise painted across the sky, there comes a period of (typically) blue calm or cloudy skies, then most people’s favorite, sunset. It is a beautiful cycle that I look forward to every day, for me it symbolizes a new day, a new opportunity, and a fresh start each day. Even on rainy or cloudy days, there is always beauty written in the sky. The sky is static, no matter where you are in the world, there is a sunset and sunrise, and I find comfort in that.

The Sky is Talking to Us

Regardless of what is painted across the sky, blue skies, cloudy skies, a rainy day, a thunderstorm, the stars, the sky is always talking to us. Regardless of what is shared across the earth, the sky is a form of communication, that’s what I believe at least. The colors painted make me feel a warmth, a sense of comfort, undeniably making me feel at home with the sky.

Pyramid - Gizeh

This photo was taken by Yann back in 1990 of sunrise at the Gizeh Pyramids, a beautiful yellow light painted across the sky.

This next photo is from Le Bourget lake in France. The blue of the water reflecting on the sky, everything about this photo is peaceful to me. The sky is painting a picture on its own canvas with the clouds.

Pause in your trek O Time! Pause in your flight,
Favorable hours, and stay!
Let us enjoy the transient delight
That fills our fairest day.

Alphonse de Lamartine, The Lake

Translated by A.Z. Foreman

To me, the sky tells its own story, and more importantly the colors and clouds tell the sky’s story. The way we lay down in a park and look at the sky and and make out shapes and characters from the clouds, there is great beauty and imagination in that. I have to admit, I did it a lot as a kid and I can’t remember the last time I did that, but I wish I did it more. I am more of a night owl, I stay out late to watch the stars and constellations.

Sunset

I will admit, my favorite is a sunset. I go to University in the ‘Ocean State’ in the United States, and I go to see a sunset on the beach every chance that I can. It feels like it was painted for us to enjoy and bask in, I feel a rebirth of energy when I am able to see a sunset. Any time that the sky is beautiful, I break my neck for just one look, and my albums are full of pictures of them. I am present in the moment and enjoy it, but no two sunsets are ever the same, so I document every chance I get to see one. I wish stars against the night sky were easy to photograph, but I guess it’s good that they’re not or my albums would be overflowing by now… like they are with sunrise and sunset pictures. This is my first time experiencing them within a city, and a sunset in Paris is one of my favorites.

Here are some pictures Yann has taken over the years, some of my favorite sunsets photos.

Provins, a mediaeval town 50 miles South-West of Paris. It is in the Brie region, but it used to be part of the Champagne district in the Middle Ages.

It is the start of a new day, a new opportunity, and everlasting beauty that you know is sure to come back the next day.

Nature is beautiful, there is truly indescribable beauty surrounding us at every moment.
