The Red Brazilian Residence

The other day we were visiting the Cité U for the umpteenth time. It’s funny how you can visit some places a hundred times and still discover new things. That was the case on that dreary January day outside the Brazilian residence (built by architects Le Corbusier and Lucio Costa). I was looking into the empty building when I caught a glimpse of a reflection I found somewhat interesting. It turned out the picture was a total dud and just as […]

Paris’ oldest clock

It’s the City’s oldest and a brilliant piece of watchmaking at the corner of the Conciergerie in the heart of Paris. I read on that page that it was 47-metre long but it’s hard for me to figure out. This must be a typo. Anyway, I agree with them, one can pass by it without noticing it. And so I did for many years, whizzing past it on my Brompton. This clock was “[…] commissioned by King Charles V in 1370 and […]

One step further for the anti museum

The anti museum needed a new logo and this is why. As I am thinking about my new project I have begun to redesign this blog. This is only step one, but soon I will install a new template for antimuseum.com. It will cease to be a blog and will be promoted to a website. The blog will still be visible on the website and I will continue to update it regularly. I will even post more and more content […]

Versailles Milestones or Guard Stones

Milestones or Guard Stones in Versailles At first, I thought these milestones might have been installed for dogs to relieve themselves. Which they undoubtedly seem to be doing, with their masters’ blessing, I’m sure. On second thought I realised they might not be milestones at all but protective stones to avoid the pillars (there is a flat upstairs) to be damaged by horse-drawn or man-drawn carts. Many of such stones can be seen in mediaeval cities like Provins, a formerly […]

Age of self

This is the age of selfies

There’s people doing frightfully well, there’s others on the shelf, this is the age of Selfies. This is the age of selfies I’m perfectly aware of Robert Wyatt’s political bias, and I must admit that I don’t share his views. Yet, this song from the early 1980s has been on my mind ever since and I can’t help thinking of this song whenever I see a selfie being made. I thought it would be slightly ironic too, to make a […]

Escherian Stairwell and the Penrose stair

Here is a representation of an Escherian stairwell in the South of Paris. Escherian Stairwell and the Penrose Stair It’s one of the staircases along the “petite ceinture” (literally small belt). The belt is the former orbital railway line that the French Railways decided to close in the 1930s. Those of you familiar with Agatha Christie’s Mystery of the Blue Train know about that line. The Blue Train was circling on it around the City. Christie clearly described this in […]
